Don't you worry your pretty little head. Garcia makes it through. I also hear that Morgan moves in with Garcia to protect her! However, that twosome doesn't progress very far, romantically, because Nicholas Brendon (Xander!) is about to join the show as a new Garcia love interest.

Joe Mantegna...

Veteran actor Joe Mantegna says he's trying to make his entry into CBS' "Criminal Minds" as easy as possible for everyone.

The 60-year-old actor is sliding into a spot left open when Mandy Patinkin decided to leave the show.

"All I can do is just be who I am and just be myself," said Mantegna. "It needn't complicate the rest of the cast's lives any more than it has to because, obviously, there must have been some complications that needed an adjustment. I just felt that I'm there to do my best and fit in."

But it wasn't as if Mantegna was walking into a room full of strangers on his first day.

In fact, he says about 50% of the Wednesday night series "Criminal Minds" crew came from his 2003-2005 hit show "Joan of Arcadia."

"It's kind of ironic for me because the day 'Joan of Arcadia' finally got word that we weren't being picked up, I went up to the office to clear out my trailer and I remember they were packing up all these boxes and they all had 'Criminal Minds' written on the side," said Mantegna. "Our two producers at the time both went to 'Criminal Minds,' they were the original show-runners there, and they took a big portion of the crew with them, so when I came to the first day [on 'Minds'], it was unbelievable."

Though Mantegna's character, David Rossi, will take over the job Patinkin's Gideon left behind, Mantegna emphasizes the fact that the characters are two very different people.

"I use a sports analogue," said Mantegna, who begins his role on the show next week. "Like if a baseball team traded a batter and brought in a new guy, it's a totally different guy, but he's still doing the same job batting at a certain number in the lineup. Hopefully, the audience will find that interesting and exciting, and we hope the show will continue to be the success that it is."

Though Mantegna wasn't a die-hard "Criminal Minds" fan before he landed his role on the CBS show, once he signed his contract, he immersed himself in the previous four seasons' DVDs.

"I usually discover shows in syndication," said Mantegna. "Like when I did 'The Starter Wife' with Debra Messing; for me, 'Will & Grace' was like a new show because I watched it at midnight in syndication."

"Of course, I'm now the biggest fan in the world of 'Criminal Minds,'" said Mantegna. "I love the show. I love the writing. The people, the cast, the characters. For me, it's been a great fit. I was looking for a show exactly like this."

Episode 3.10 - Birthright: The team figures out that a serial killer who is kidnapping couples, killing the husbands and holding the wives captive until they misbehave then killing them, is the son of a serial killer (and his wife) from 25 years ago who killed in the same exact way. One of the original killer's victims escaped and had a son from her captor. He and his mother, who was rescued by the original killer's wife, who then killed her husband so he couldn't hurt anyone else, have had a hard life.

Don't tell Lois, but Malcolm has found himself in the middle of a murder investigation!

Reliable sources confirm to me exclusively that ex-Malcolm in the Middle whippersnapper Frankie Muniz has been tapped to appear in a November sweeps episode of Criminal Minds. The now-21(!)-year-old actor play a famous comic book artist who becomes involved in the search for a serial killer in Los Angeles.

I seriously hope "becomes involved in the search" isn't code for "becomes a prime suspect." Turning Dawson Leery into a modern-day Norma Bates was one thing, but Malcolm?! That would be a little creepy even for me. And I like creepy.

Muniz' episode is slated to air on Nov. 28.

Young Garcia - Actually there are three young Garcias being casted - a 5 year-old, a 9 year-old, and one in the 18/20 year-old range. While we see them, the emergency crew is working frantically to save her life - then she flatlines. We see the 5 year-old Garcia in a ballet outfit laughing with her parents, and the 9 year-old proudly showing her parents a comic book. We see the older one in two scenes - one where she is at a funeral with two caskets (her parents, maybe) and then dressed like a tough girl, almost punkish. Don't worry, she lives.

Kevin - For the record, this guy sounds adorable. He is a computer tech that the team hires to get into Garcia's system to get some information on what she was working on so as to get a lead. They also want him to do a search for a man with the initials CB in the bar association system. Well, for reasons they don't explain Garcia is in her apartment trying to block him. A game of cat and mouse ensues, which in this tech heavy conversation is about the only thing I can truly understand. That, and Kevin finds something disturbing that he SENDS to Garcia to give her a clue. What's truly cute in this scene is that Kevin and Garcia are AMAZED by one another through this interchange, and when they meet at the end it seems we're heading for young Geeks in love.

Fleming - Seems to be some sort of law enforcement official. Colby shoots him when he tried to apprehend him.

ER Nurse- This seems to be one of those sides that apply to multiple roads. Its the scene where they are working on Garcia in the emergency room and the OR, which let's us know its a miracle the woman survived. (Well, since there are no cannibals this week I guess the blood and special effects budget had to go somewhere!)

Vickie - The girlfriend of Jonny McHale that we see in flashback They are in a loft together and Jonny is working on drawing comics. Vickie jokingly whacks him with a pillow and asks if he intends on working all night because she wants beef jerky. The happy couple take a late night walk to get the jerky, when Vickie reveals to Jonny that she is pregnant. Thrilled, Jonny gets on one knee to propose, when they are approached by several menancing figures including a man referred to as Buckingham. Jonny tells them that he doesn't have much money on him, trying to avert a robbery. Buckingham tells him, tauntingly, that he may not have much money but he does have a fiancee. They wrestle Jonny to the ground and that's where the scene ends. (Note: Whatever happened to Vickie, we can assume it was not good. In current time Jonny is not drawing in a cheerful loft but a cramped, dark artist studio. There's also a scene with Jonny and a friend, Park, who is advising him that he knows a therapist who can help him through a "trauma".)

Less than a week after Criminal Minds returns to the small screen with new episodes, Touchstone Television LLC and CBS Studios Inc. will release the complete second season DVD of the critically-acclaimed crime drama. The DVD will contain all 23 episodes of show's sophomore run, as well as a number of special features.

Criminal Minds follows a team of profilers from the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) at Quantico, Virginia as they solve cases by focusing on the criminal rather than the actual crime. For the show's second season, actress Paget Brewster (Friends) was added to the cast and tasked to play Emily Prentiss, a Yale graduate who joined the team as Agent Elle Greenaway's (Lola Glaudini) replacement.

Among the special features in the second season DVD are “Profilers, Profiled,” “The Physical Evidence,” “Behavioral Science: Real-Life Criminal Minds,” “Meet Kirsten Vangsness,” a gag reel and deleted scenes. The DVD also contains audio commentaries on 4 episodes, namely “The Fisher King, Part 2,” “The Perfect Storm,” “Profiler, Profiled” and “Revelations.”

Cast and crew members featured in the commentaries are Ed and Amanda Bernero, Debra Fisher, Erica Messer, Nicki Aycox, Glenn Kershaw, Chris Mundy, Shemar Moore and Matthew Gray Gubler.

The DVD has been priced at $45.99 and will be available by October 2, while the third season of Criminal Minds will premiere on Wednesday, September 26, on CBS. New lead actor Joe Mantegna, who will play FBI Special Agent David Rossi, will first appear in the series during the season's fifth episode.

While waiting for the latest DVD and new season of Criminal Minds, fans can catch reruns of the show every Wednesday night at 9pm on CBS. Trooper = We get from these sides the description of one of the "victims" of this serial killer. She is Sheena Timmens ( see Sheena sides)

State Trooper = We get a profile of the perpetrator in this side. Hotch, Jordna, and Rossi are talking with the trooper. They say that the perpetrator is a man who cannot make friends, and most likely works a lower-station blue colar job. He's also probably not too intelligent. The State Trooper balks at this, saying he can't be too dumb if he managed to kill 10 women and get away with it. Rossi points out that there was another serial killer who killed 48 women with a low average IQ. HE was so successful because he chose women he would not have to try to hard to grab - prostitutes. THIS new killer is getting a little sloppy because he wants new challenges, hence the murder of Gina Kelton.

Sheena and Bob Timmens- She is part of the search party looking for another missing girl, Casey. Sheena and Bob are looking in the woods when she feels the urge to go to the bathroom, so she looks for a secluded area in the woods to relieve herself (obviously the killer is not the only one with below average intelligence) and is grabbed by the killer. He takes her to his Satanic room and cuts her pants with a knife, and then rubs her legs with oil. If not too bright, Sheena is lucky in that the authorities find her in time to save her life. They also find evidence of other crimes, including Floyd's freezer which we know contains the remains of his other victims.

Lee-Ann and Bob Kelton - the parents of another victim, Gina Kelton. They tell the cops that they cannot have an open coffin due to the state of Gina's body, and Lee-Ann shows them pictures of Gina that they are considering. Lee-Ann keeps talking about Gina in the present tense, and her husband corrects her. Upset, Lee-Ann leaves and Jennifer follows to comfort her. Bob then turns to Rossi and tells him that he had to identify Gina's body, which even covered by a sheet he knew there was something wrong with it. He asks Rossi if he NEEDS to know what happened. Rossi tells him no, and all the memories he needs are in those pictures (we know from the Dr. Fulton sides that Gina was tortured and her body was mutilated. One of the worst things, she was made to eat one of her own fingers and the fingers of nine others).

Dr. Nash and Dr. Lorenz - The authorities go to visit Dr. Nash, an administrator at a home for criminally insane youth. He explains the rules to them, that once the patient turns 18 they age out of the program and they are released. They ask him about a patient who may have been there in the past, and he tells them that would be better known by Dr. Lorenz, but he died in the fire. However, he does have his case notes and gives them to the cops. When searching, they find a patient who fits the killer's profile - Floyd Feylinn Fredericks. We see Dr. Lorenz in flashback, and he is pleading with Dr. Nash and a boardmember to keep Fredericks there since he fears what he may do if he comes off the medication and he doesn't trust him to take his medication. The other two men refuse since the policy is clear. Dr. Lorenz warns them that he will kill again.

Okay - now here is a MAJOR CLIFFHANGER ALERT. I am scrolling it down a bit, but if you don't want a cliffhanger ruined DO NOT READ!

Joe Mantegna confident about new role...

Although the cast of Criminal Minds are ready to move forward sans Mandy Patinkin, they are still concerned about how the viewers will react to the forthcoming season. Shemar Moore, who plays Special Agent Derek Morgan, admitted Patinkin contributed to the show’s success, but was quick to add that the show does not necessarily need the actor to survive.

“We all know what Mandy brought, and it was a wonderful ingredient, but it wasn’t an overwhelming, necessary ingredient for this show to work. This show works with or without any of us,” Moore said, adding he is certain viewers will compare Patinkin to new lead actor Joe Mantegna.

“There’s nothing we can do,” Moore continued. “We’re going to have to weather that storm.”

Patinkin left the series without prior notice in July. A joint statement from CBS Paramount Network Television and ABC Studios attributed the actor’s departure to “creative differences,” though Moore hinted during the TCA press tour that the dark subject matter of the show greatly affected Patinkin on and off the set.

On the other hand, Joe Mantegna, who is set to play Special Agent David Rossi, said he is confident about joining Criminal Minds, and is not worried about the show’s difficult and violent storylines.

“Over the course of my career, I’ve been shot and I’ve been maimed,” the 59-year-old actor said with a wry smile. “At least this time it’s happening to someone else. I really don’t have much problem detaching myself from my work.”

Mantegna declined, however, from talking about Patinkin’s abrupt exit from Criminal Minds. “It’s not on my radar,” he said. “I don’t know what the old ballgame was, and I don’t care. It’s the first day of school, but I’ve been going to school for a long time.”

Mantegna will first appear on the series on October 31. His character serves as the antithesis of Patinkin’s Gideon, thanks to executive-producer Ed Bernero.

“In looking over the world of television shows, the show I think that replaced characters the best of all time was M*A*S*H,” Bernero said. “M*A*S*H always replaced a character with an exact opposite. When McLean Stevenson left, who played a total anti-authority guy, they replaced him with Sherman T. Potter, who was a regular Army stick-in-the-mud. They filled the same role, but with someone who was the opposite. That’s what we wanted to do.”

The third season of Criminal Minds will begin airing on October 3.

Mandy moves on?...

With Criminal Minds, CBS had a winner on its hands. The network had assembled a cast -- led by Mandy Patinkin, known for his rivetingly intense performances -- which delivered a drama in which a team of FBI agents analyze the behavior of criminals in order to solve or preempt brutal crimes. Viewers loved it and Criminal Minds regularly appeared in the top 10 or top 20 in weekly ratings.

But in July when the cast was expected to return from their summer break to begin working on the show's third season, Patinkin simply did not show up. Instead, he asked to be released from the hit series. CBS
granted his request citing "creative differences" but hinting the star's split with the show was more because of "a personal issue".

Patinkin's move may have stunned his Hollywood bosses and Criminal Minds fans around the world. But his sudden departure came as little surprise to journalists who had interviewed him a few weeks prior in Monaco.

As he sat with the media at the Monte Carlo Television Festival in mid-June to promote Criminal Minds, it was clear this was a man with a deep conflict between what he felt his role in the entertainment world should be and how he actually spent 14 to 16 hours a day, 10 months out of the year.

"I loathe those violent images and I want no part of that type of violence. I work with the writers and producers constantly to try and tamper that violence down," Patinkin said of some of the gruesome content of the show, which earned Criminal Minds criticism from its very debut.

Patinkin had been attracted to the series, he said, because he was interested in the intellectual journey of the criminal's mind, the interrogator's mind, and the victim's situation and history.

"That intellectual journey of which side of the line do we live on is what fascinates me always because we're all capable of fantasy but the difference between acting on fantasy and having the fantasy is the difference between a serial killer and someone who writes a novel."

Patinkin did seek to justify the show's existence by describing it as a "teaching tool" which would help parents understand and catch warning signs in their children (such as constant bed-wetting and cruelty to animals) and get them help before psychopathic tendencies calcified into a criminal personality. But he acknowledged the ugliness the show portrayed went against what he felt the world needed to see.

"I want to see more humour coming to television.... I want to live long enough to see the appetite for comedy become greater than the appetite for violence."

His own favourite television shows, he said, were All in the Family and The Honeymooners because they brought viewers poignant lessons about life with humour.

The former star of Chicago Hope, who also suddenly bowed out of that series, spoke of the struggle creative folk grapple with because they have an "oversensitivity" to the human condition.

"It is a great burden; many people who are great writers, and actors and musicians take their lives because they can't bear what's happening in the human condition. Certainly that's not an answer, but you understand that it's because of an oversensitivity to human nature."

Having extracted himself from Criminal Minds, Patinkin, who won a Tony award for his performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita, has hit the road with a two-hour musical "filled with comedy".

In Monaco, Patinkin's eyes lit up as he spoke of plans to tour the world with the sunnier project, which seems more in tune with his disposition and with what he said he sees as the role of the entertainment business: "First to entertain you by grabbing your attention and then by giving you a kernel of hope with an idealistic view of how to make the world's life better."

Mandy Patinkin's sudden exit from Criminal Minds left the cast and crew on the edge as they tried to find a way to deal with the loss. The news spread like wildfire on the internet. Various sites pointed the finger at the production crew, with stories claiming that Patinkin and the producers had gotten into nasty contract negotiations that resulted in the actor leaving the series.

"I really started looking at this stuff and we were being blamed," executive producer Ed Bernero said of the accusatory web articles. "This guy never asked for anything he didn't get. We have a culture where we're so ... forgiving of celebrities -- they were looking for a reason to make it everybody else's fault.”

During the press tour last month, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said that Mandy Patinkin's departure was due to “creative differences.” At the time, however, the internet had already created much negative buzz for the series, leaving Bernero no other choice but to clarify the situation himself.

"Let me make this clear: This is not about a contract renegotiation, this is not about money, this is not about something Mr. Patinkin asked for and wasn't provided -- in fact, everyone involved in the show has for two years bent over backward to give him anything he wanted," Bernero wrote on one of the show's unofficial fan blogs.

"Mr. Patinkin told the show, the studios and the network he was returning right up to the day before we started shooting the first episode and then simply did not show up. ... He was not, as some media reports have indicated, written 'lightly' in our first episode. In fact it was quite the opposite. Because of the construct of the first episode story, he was actually in the center of that episode. He left us completely in the proverbial lurch."

In a more recent interview with Washington Post's TV Column, Bernero said that he came out with the statement not to paint Mandy Patinkin in a bad light, but to simply save Criminal Minds.

"It was not personal about Mandy, it was about the show not being blamed for [his departure]. I thought it was really detrimental for the show losing Mandy, which was big in itself, and then have people blame the show," Bernero explained. "It was trying to say, 'Guys, we didn't do this.' "

Now that the dust has finally settled, the show is ready to move on with its latest cast member, Joe Mantegna. However, Patinkin is expected to appear in two episodes of the show's upcoming season, as a way of providing closure for his character, Gideon. Contrary to what has been reported, Bernero told TV Column that Patinkin worked 14 hours on the set, and that he worked alone simply because the other cast members were not needed in the scenes.

"It's not that they didn't want to work with him,” Bernero explained.

The third season premiere of Criminal Minds is a modified version of an unaired episode from the previous season. In the episode, the team leads an investigation of a serial killer targeting women at a college. CBS decided to yank the episode because its air date corresponded with the Virginia Tech killings.

Now, scenes from that episode will be part of a flashback, integrated with scenes showing Gideon writing a “cryptic note” to someone. Viewers will find out who the note is for in the second episode, as well as how things will end for Gideon.

Victim 2 - A young female brunette whi is the victim of a serial abductor/murderer named Goehring. Her hands are bound by ropes, and Goehring is instructing his protege, Frost, on how to tie the knots so that the victim cannot escape. We also get an insight into Goehring and Frost's twisted worlds as they make the victim recite the rules of the kingdom, one of which is insubordination will bring punishment. This scene is seen via a videotape that the cops are watching.

Trooper 2 - He and some backup go to apprehend Goehring after a brief car chase. When Goehring exists the vehicle he has a grenade which he detonates, killing himself and severly burning Trooper 2.

Robert Miller - Married to Angela, Goehring's last abduction victim. The family was here for a vacation, to get away from it all. Robert had to take their young son to the bathroom, and as Angela took the groceries to the car she was abducted.

Manager - This is the manager of the trailer park where Goehring lived. He is none too welcoming, with signs like "Keep Out!" and "Keep Montana Armed!" on his door. He does not want to help the cops, but after they threaten to write up some code violations at the trailer park he lets them into Goehring's trailer. The cops find it neat and clean, and find: gun and militia type catalogs, and history books on medieval history and the Spanish Inquisition. The cops note that Goehring kept his living space bunker style, with a padlocked trunk as the foot of his bed. When they break the trunk, they find a picture of Goehring and a young brown-haired woman, his wife June.

June - June appears as a confident young business woman. She and her husband have been estranged for quite some time. Prentiss notices that all of the abduction victims resemble June, and ask if he also kept June prisioner. After some coaxing, June admits that he did and the only way he would let her out was if she gave him the land her parents left to her.

Harris - He is a bar owner who is also part of the militia. When the cops enter there is automatic hostility and even the fear of a fire fight. However, Harris' attitude changes when he hears what Goehring has been doing. He tells the cops that Goehring disappeared, but last time he saw him he was with Frost who was like his minion. We later see Harris again in the final confrontation with Frost. The cops say that they need a sharpshooter to take Frost down, and Sheriff Williams says he took care of it. Out from his truck comes Harris, armed and ready to save the girl. Williams tells the cops that Harris was a Special Forces sharpshooter and that he deputized him. Harris is taken up to position by Rossi, who tells Harris that bureau policy is to shoot to kill. Hotch tries to talk to Frost, who has Becky as his hostage (she is described later). Frost, it seems, is suffering from a mental disorder in which he now thinks that he is Goehring. From other points from the sides, we learn that Frost is a mentally unstable effeminate gay man. Goehring made Frost his lacky by punishing him and mistreating him, which played into Frost's self-loathing. The only way to be someone was to gain Goehring's approval, and Frost fell in love with him. However, when Goehring died Frost, mentally unstable and lost, completely lost it and in an attempt to make himself something again made himself believe he was Goehring. Hotch appeals to Frost and does bring himself back to his own identity, however since Frost was nuts to begin with he is going to kill Becky anyway. Harris is given the order to shoot - but instead of shooting to kill Harris shoots the rifle out of Frost's hands. Rossi looks surprised, when Harris tells him that the bureau may have their policy, but he has his own and there was no need for Frost to die.

Employee 3- Gives Jennifer a positive ID on who Frost is,

Cashier - Gives the cops their first clue that Frost is committing these crimes THINKING that he's Goehring.

Becky - Frost's first victim as Goehring. While she is in the trunk of the car, we get an insight into Frost's mind and it is NOT PRETTY! He mentally visualizes Goehring sitting next to him, and Goehring giving Frost his approval that he has become someone.

"Criminal Minds" regular AJ Cook says in the wake of Mandy Patinkin's unexpected departure and ensuing brouhaha, the cast and crew has "rolled with the punches. "We're not going to lie and say we weren't surprised and disappointed, but we're going to move forward and hope that it all goes fine," says the gorgeous blond actress, who plays FBI Special Agent Jennifer "JJ" Jareau on the CBS drama. "We wish the best to Mandy."

Joe Mantegna has been announced as the replacement for Patinkin's character, Supervisory Special Agent Jason Gideon, and Cook says, "The writers are locked in a room somewhere trying to find out who this new character is and how to bring him on. It'll be interesting to see how that changes the dynamic on the set and on screen."

The writers are also dealing with how to explain Gideon's absence. Cook says she'd be "personally shocked" if they kill off the character. "Last season his girlfriend was killed and he was on the run trying to find the killer, so luckily they had that, to set up his departure." As for the ultimate fate of Patinkin's character, she says, "They've left us all in the dark here. All I know is we're looking for him … We're trying to figure out where he is and hunt the man down." She adds with a laugh, "What's so funny is, it's kind of art imitating life. In our read-through, we had lines in there that seemed to be pulled out of our lives -- 'Has anyone seen Gideon -- or Mandy?'"

She says Patinkin did eventually contact his former cast mates after leaving sans notice. "We have been kind of playing phone tag, but he has gone out of his way to make sure he reached all of us." She adds, "I think that was the biggest part for us … We just didn't know what was going on, and we were all worried. Once we got into contact with him and knew he was OK, then it was we just want him to be happy."

Joe Mantegna has joined the cast of ABC's crime drama, Criminal Minds, replacing actor Mandy Patinkin, who unceremoniously departed from the show last month.

According to the network, Mantegna is set to play retired FBI special agent David Rossi, a former member of the Behavioral Analyst Unit who retired early in order to go on lecture and book tours, and has volunteered to come back to the unit.

"We are all thrilled to have Joe Mantegna joining our family," executive producer Ed Bernero said in a statement Tuesday. "He's an incredible actor, a genuinely nice person."

Prior to Mantegna, the network was wooing actor Harvey Keitel to replace Patinkin, who played FBI profiler Jason Gideon, on Criminal Minds. After Patinkin quit the show due to “creative differences,” CBS approached several other actors, including Geena Davis, Bob Hoskins and Michael Keaton, before finally zeroing in on Keitel. They entered negotiations last week, but that eventually fell through due to a number of the actor's demands.

Joe Mantegna, 59, most recently appeared on the USA Network's miniseries, The Starter Wife, wherein he played Durango Pictures head Lou Manahan. His work on the miniseries has earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie. This is Mantegna's third Emmy nod, having previously been nominated twice in the category, once for The Last Don and the other for The Rat Pack.

Mantegna is also known for his role on the defunct family drama, Joan of Arcadia, wherein he played Will Girardi for two seasons.

His other notable acting credits include Baby's Day Out, First Monday, Liberty Heights, Up Close & Personal and Eye for an Eye. He is also the voice behind Fat Tony on the long-running animated series, The Simpsons.

Mantegna is expected to make his first appearance on Criminal Minds on the fifth episode of the upcoming season.

The third season of Criminal Minds is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, September 26.

Mandy Patinkin returns...

Mandygate just gets weirder and weirder.

My moles at Criminal Minds have just confirmed for me exclusively that disgraced cranky-pants Mandy Patinkin will be returning to the show this fall after all — but only for one episode (airing Oct. 3), so as to provide some closure for his Gideon character. Strange as that may sound, though, that isn't the really odd part: He'll only be in one scene, and he'll essentially be the only one in it.

Why? Well, duh! My spies tell me that no one in the cast wanted to work opposite him again after he brought production to a standstill by pulling a no-show without even calling in (cough, cough) sick. What's more, Minds' producers were forced to use a special crew to shoot the pariah's scene because the show's regular staff refused to be on set with him.

Except possibly to Patinkin, who seems to live in his own world, the backlash against him isn't entirely a surprise. Last month, costar Shemar Moore raked him over the coals at press tour. "I don't like that he did this the way he did this," the former soap stud said. "I don't think it's right. He left us hanging... no warning, no nothing. We all showed up to work on Day 1, and he didn't.

"He needs to take responsibility for his actions," Moore continued, "[and] just acknowledge us, because it's an ensemble, it's a team.... We just want the courtesy and the respect that we deserve. And we felt like if he had given us that initially, this would be much easier to deal with. He essentially just slapped us in the face."

As such, what will transpire in Mandy's final scene on the show? The onetime Chicago Hope firestarter gets in a car and drives away, a new bridge burning in his rearview mirror.

It's not going to be Harvey Keitel or Geena Davis or Michael Keaton or even Rosie O'Donnell. The new person in charge on Criminal Minds is Joe Mantegna.

The CBS show hired Mantegna over the weekend, ending speculation over who would replace Mandy Patinkin, who has already left the show and will not be making anymore appearances. Besides classic movies such as House of Games and Bugsy, Mantegna costarred on the USA series The Starter Wife earlier this summer, was on the gone-but-not-forgotten drama Joan of Arcadia, does the voice of Fat Tony on The Simpsons, and made a poor substitute for Robert Urich when they made those Spenser movies on cable (nothing against Mantegna, he was quite good, it just wasn't Spenser, you know?).

No word yet on how they'll write out Patinkin or how Mantegna's character will join the team, though some episodes are already done and Patinkin's abscence will be explained in the season premiere.

Criminal Minds: Nellie Andreeva who writes for "The Hollywood Reporter" wrote her Criminal Minds story last night and said "on the "Minds" fan blog during" while writing about Mr. Bernero's announcement to us on Friday. I spoke with her this morning and she informed me that CBS Publicity told her to refer to the blog that way instead of posting a proper credit. I know the head of CBS West Coast Publicity and she would never tell them to miscredit a story. So either Ms. Andreeva misunderstood or she has just promoted us to being "the Minds" fan blog. I would be laughing about it but when I asked her to correct the error her husband hung up on me. Wow. :)

Criminal Minds executive producer Ed Bernero revealed that Joe Mantegna will be replacing Mandy Patinkin on the CBS drama. “We are very excited to tell you all that Joe Mantegna is officially joining the cast of Criminal Minds. Thanks for hanging with us, everyone,” he said. It was previously reported that Harvey Keitel was in talks to join the cast, but those talks fell through. Patinkin quit abruptly last month because of what he termed “creative differences.” The show revolving around the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit, returns for a third season in the fall.

Prior to the recording of this week's podcast, Ausiello said Joe Mantegna was Criminal Minds' new front runner, and this time the front runner actually crossed the finish line. Joan of Arcadia's pop has been called upon to fill the vacany left on when Mandy Patinkin... well, we're still not 100 percent sure what he did. "We are very excited to tell you all that Joe Mantegna is officially joining the cast, Bernero shares at the Criminal Minds Fanatic blog. "Thanks for hanging with us, everyone."

In the weeks since Patinkin's defection from the hit CBS series, such big names as Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Harvey Keitel and Doris Roberts [Wink-wink] were tossed around as possible subs. At this point, with Minds being several episodes into production on the new season, Mantegna is not likely to first appear until perhaps November sweeps.

Keital to replace Patinkin?...

When we first announced that Mandy Patinkin was leaving Criminal Minds, fans were pretty devastated. A lot of commenters felt no one could replace him and some even said they wouldn't watch the show without him. Today, there's word that actor Harvey Keitel is in negotiations to replace Patinkin on the popular series. Keitel is a pretty heavy hitter, but will he be enough to keep fans tuning in?

Keitel will no doubt bring a much different feel to the show. Patinkin's character was rather subdued and kind-of morose, but I don't see that coming from Harvey Keitel. And, who would want that anyway? A new character needs to bring something new to the table. (Geena Davis was reportedly in negotiations for Patinkin's role but those broke down last month)

Would Keitel make an adequate replacement for Patinkin?

Mandy Patinkin ended his involvement with CBS' Criminal Minds abruptly and without prior notice. The manner in which he left the show irked co-star Shemar Moore, who said that Patinkin should have forewarned them instead of just simply failing to show up at work one day and leaving everyone scrambling to find a way to deal with his sudden departure.

“If you needed to leave the show to kind of feel better about yourself, that's fine,” Moore told reporters at last month's press tour. “You want to be closer to your family, that's fine. You want to go sing songs and travel, that's fine. But give us a heads-up. Give us a warning.”

Although the reasons behind Patinkin's exit remain vague, Shemar Moore believes that it is not due to any problems concerning his co-star's health.

“He's not in harm's way, he's fine, he just is not speaking to anybody,” Moore said. “There's nothing wrong with Mandy, no. Mandy's issues are his own personal issues.

“He was never comfortable as an actor. And this is a guy who won Tony Awards and all this other stuff. But when he would talk to me, he's an emotional guy. Sometimes he was the strongest man in the world, the proudest man in the world, and sometimes he was very much like a little child and you almost got this sense that you had to take care of him. He felt safe around me, and I was flattered by that,” he continued.

Despite believing that Mandy Patinkin's departure from Criminal Minds is not health- related, Moore hinted the dark subject matter of the show greatly affected his co-star's fragile psyche.

“The content is tough, but at the end of the day, I'm an actor who learns lines and I say my lines and then I distance myself from it and go back to my life,” Shemar Moore said. “[Patinkin] took it a little more personally.”

Thomas Gibson, who also appears on Criminal Minds, is disappointed over Patinkin's exit as well, but is still optimistic about the show's upcoming season.

“We look at this as a great opportunity to shake things up. This is certainly a disappointment to everyone, but I don't think it's a catastrophe,” he said.

Harvey, we hardly knew ya. Just hours after word broke that Harvey Keitel was thisclose to signing a contract with Criminal Minds for the spot left vacant by the disappearing Mandy Patinkin, sources say the deal is no longer on the table. This makes Keitel the latest big name to be stricken from the show’s most-wanted list. Others include Geena Davis, Michael Keaton and Bob Hoskins. Despite the suspense surrounding the search, we hear the show is still chugging along fine without the replacement. The first three episodes are already in the can (with Patinkin’s absence being dealt with in the season-opener). This means that whoever the new character is, he/she (and we suspect it’s a he) won’t be appearing until later in the season.

Actor on 36 Months probation...

After pleading no contest in an alcohol-related speeding case, Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore received a sentence of 36 months probation. In addition to his probation, he will also be serving DUI related conditions, including not driving with alcohol in his system, and contributing 80 hours worth of community service. His community service comes with the option of wearing an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet, but according to his publicist, Staci Wolfe, Moore has yet to make a decision.

On June 1, the 37-year-old actor was stopped by the California Highway Patrol for going 65mph on a city street. With an alcohol-blood level of .08, he was placed under arrest. Three weeks later, he was charged with driving under the influence. The actor then pleaded no contest, and as part of his plea deal, the DUI charges were dropped.

Of his arrest, Shemar Moore said, “My problem is I like fast cars. I'll drive fast late at night on the 5 [freeway]. That particular night the mistake I made was I was driving too fast. As far as any alcohol-related charges, they were all dropped because they really were not an issue… I was speeding… I know there are children out there. I don't want to send the wrong message. I'm not a reckless person… I'm a risk taker. I'm not above the law. I was taking my chances and I got caught."

Aside from his run-in with the law, the Criminal Minds actor was recently involved in another headline-making story. Two weeks ago, photos of a naked Moore at a gay beach spread like wildfire through the internet. The photos prompted many to question Moore's sexuality, but the actor denied the rumors, saying that he and his female friends, who had been cut out of the pictures, thought the beach was unisex.

"The worst part of that whole thing for me was the [word] 'frolicking,'” Shemar Moore said, referring to the term tabloids used to describe his naked beach photos. “To me that sounds like I'm skipping or something like that. I have no problems with it. What I have a problem with is they're making such an issue out of me being gay!

"I'll say right now, I'm not gay. Not even a little bit. I love women. Women are God's greatest creation. But I have no problems with people that are gay. My godfather was gay. He died of AIDS. I have dear friends that are gay. I'm very straight,” the Criminal Minds actor continued.
